Abstract: This paper mainly discusses the crazy pursuit of stability in the Brave New World. In order to achieve the so-called stability which is considered as the supreme principle in the new world at the group and individual levels, people take three main methods: limiting science, conditioning people and exiling rebels. The methods work well, however, it is debatable whether the social state achieved at these costs can be called real stability and whether it has significance for social development. Environment and science, the two crucial elements which matter much in the stability of human society in the long run, are ignored. By conditioning, humans are deprived of freedom and transformed into emotionless robots, without the ability to think independently and right to carry out free will. Such stability in the brave new world is transient and meaningless.

论文题目The Gap Between Lust and Gratification —— Reflections onBrave New World

欲望与满足之间的缝隙——《美丽新世界》之反思

AbstractIt is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied. Brave New World introduces a notion that pain lies in the gap between lust and gratification, and soma and feelies stand as an instant gratification to narrow this gap as well as to alleviate the pain. In the climax where John and Mustapha Mond started a heated debate on whether social stability is an ultimate fruition worthy of abandoning beauty and happiness, or in their words, high art. This paper intends to contend that its humanity that separates human beings from animals, that its humans inherent right to feel pain and that to suffer soberly is far more meaningful than to feel complacent blindly by citing the theories of John Stuart Mill, Arthur Schopenhauer and the example of Sisyphus.

Keywords: Pain, Gratification, Humanity, Stability, Happiness

李昕颖

论文题目D for Dignity, Delusion and Damnation  On Dignity and The Sense of Self in The Remains of The Day

《长日留痕》:尊严与自我价值

指导老师:肖一之博士

主讲人:李昕颖,英语学院2019级翻译专业及人文实验班学生。

Abstract: Dignity originated from the Latin word Dignitas, meaning worthiness. To Mr. Stevens, the mercilessly formal and precise English butler of Darlington Hall, dignity is the essential ingredient of a great butler, and a great butler is someone who inhabits their professional role to the utmost. Not only does our protagonist describe dignity as wearing your professionalism like a suit, and one should only discard of it when they are entirely alone, but also executes this belief to the fullest. On the surface, The Remains of The Day seems like a story of nostalgia and reminiscence - Mr. Stevens recounts the past as he takes a road trip to the West Country to meet with an old acquaintance, Miss Kenton. This paper focuses on observing Mr. Stevenss trip down memory lane, or as it reveals, an unintended journey of self-realization, loss and heartbreak.

Keywords: Dignity, Professionalism, Denial, Self-Worth, Regret
