The Importance of Being Nobody: Emily Dickinson’s Feminist Expression

Abstract: Throughout long periods of history, men’s perception of the world had shaped rules and patterns found in literature. Women rarely had the chance to tell stories from their own perspectives. They were manipulated by men and dictated by their desires. Emily Dickinson, born in 1830, is one of the greatest poets in American history. By creating the concept of “nobody” as her feminist expression, she proves how people cannot be simply categorized according to their genders. Her ambition is to strip away all societal labels and challenge the faults of society. To liberate herself from all the gender assumptions, she has chosen to live reclusively and invented innovative poetic models. Dickinson does not intend to speak solely for herself or for any females. Instead, she aims to speak of the general condition. Her gift is in depicting the spectrum of all human emotions. Dickinson’s poetry shows that a great mind must be androgynous.

Beast on an Island: A Glimpse of Heterotopia in Lord of the Flies

Abstract: Lord of the Flies unfolds the gradual degradation of a group of boys deserted on an island. Despite their effort on maintaining rules and getting rescued, the boys eventually become savage and violent, and learn that the Beast is but the evilness in their own hearts. This essay tries to explore the significance of the island as the novel’s setting in relation to the Beast by borrowing Michel Foucault’s ideas on heterotopias – spaces that ‘lie outside all spaces, and yet is actually localisable’. By analysing the island’s function in creating an excluded space as well as presenting a juxtaposition of the ‘primitive’ and ‘civilised’ worlds, the island’s connection to reality looms clear, and it appears that the only way to escape the hetorotopian ‘island’ is to cope with the heterotopia of human heart.

Citizenship and Kinship: the Justice in Antigone

Abstract: The tragedy Antigone, written by Sophocles, tells the story about a political conflict between Creon, the ruler of Thebes and Antigone, his sister, on whether they shall bury Polyneices, a traitor of Thebes as well as Antigone’s brother. In the end, Creon insists executing Antigone, a decision which ruins his family, and regrets for that action. The tragedy brings the question about what is the foundation of ruling a state. This paper attempts to figure out the meaning of “justice” that Creon has learned in the end and the relation between kinship and citizenship in a state. Unlike Hegel who regards the conflict as the one between abstract principles, the paper pays attention to events and feelings of characters by analyzing the dialogue among Antigone, Creon, Haemon, and Teiresias. As a conclusion, this paper argues that as his identity degrades from a governor to a wifeless man, Creon realizes the justice includes not only an obedience demanded for state citizenship, but also an empathic deliberation for others which is derived from family kinship, that Antigone shows devotion.
